Hi ladyofspiders,
I am interested in an ancient sect called the cult of Mithras.
I have heard that they engaged in many strange practices. I have also heard that women played an important role. Is this true? What do you know about it?
Thank you
Simone Ellis
According to most sources women were not permitted to be initiated into the cult of Mithra. Mithra was a masculine deity, and part of a patriarchal society. Mithra was originally a god of ancient Persia, a god of light who helps maintain the cosmic order and helps in the struggle against evil forces. But Mithraism was adopted by the Romans. He was also known as Mitra in the Indian Vedas.
Here are some sources with detailed information about the Cult of Mithra, its practices, and the women’s role, or lack of role within the cult.
